Nicolae is also the Managing Director of Regent House Properties Ltd and numerous other companies, in UK, France and Romania, with a major portfolio in real estate and property development. Nicolaes origins are in Romania, the younger of two sons of the former Romanian politician Ion Ratiu. Born in Davos, Switzerland, educated in UK and US, Nicolae became more involved in Romanian issues in his early 40s, back in 1990, after the collapse of the communism when his father returned to Romania to run for the presidency. His principle responsibility was the founding of the COTIDIANUL daily newspaper. As Chairman of The Ratiu Foundation, a 30 year old British registered charity with its headquarters in London, Nicolae chairs a board of 5 Ratiu family members who award annually 100 grants, worth GBP 200,000, in various fields (study, research, projects, travel etc.). A businessman and philanthropist, Nicolae is also trustee of various charities, in Romania and the UK, among which are The Romanian Cultural Centre in London, Pro Patrimonio (The National Trust of Romania) and The Relief Fund for Romania. In addition, through the Ratiu Foundation, Nicolae supports major cultural and educational programs in UK, Romania and US, among which are: - The annual Romanian Film Festival in London - The annual Ratiu Lecture for Democracy in Washington - The traditional annual agricultural festival TurdaFest in Turda - The bi-annual Corneliu M Popescu Prize for European Poetry in Translation - The Romanian Connections program in Liverpool 08 European Capital of Culture As the child of a Romanian father and an English mother, Elisabeth Pilkington, Nicolae has the experience and understanding of both cultures and languages. His native language is English, but he also speaks fluent Romanian, French and German. Following a tradition initiated by his father, Ion Ratiu, Nicolae chairs family meetings back in Turda, the Ratiu family hometown in the middle of Transylvania, when numerous family members from different generations and parts of the world gather annually to celebrate the memory of Ion Ratiu and his ancestors dating back to the 16th century. He is the father of two, married to Alexandra Fedorovna Solonina, a Ukrainian jewellery designer. |
